Emergency Breakaway Valves: How They Work and Why Every Fuel Station Needs Them

by Xuzhou Desheng Petrol Machine Co.,Ltd. 30-Jun-2026

Emergency breakaway valves, also known as breakaway couplings or shear valves, are safety devices installed at critical points in fuel dispensing systems. Their purpose is simple but vital: if a vehicle drives away while the nozzle is still connected to the vehicle's fuel tank, the breakaway valve separates cleanly, sealing both ends and preventing fuel spillage and potential fire hazards. Understanding how these valves function and where they should be installed is essential for fuel station operators and safety managers.

A typical breakaway valve consists of two halves held together by a precisely engineered shear mechanism. Under normal operation, the valve functions as a standard connector, allowing fuel to flow through without restriction. However, when a predetermined pull force is applied—such as when a vehicle drives away with the nozzle still inserted—the shear mechanism activates, separating the two halves. Each half contains an internal check valve that closes immediately upon separation, preventing fuel loss from both the dispenser side and the vehicle side.

DESEINOR breakaway valves are manufactured with shear force ratings designed to activate reliably under real-world conditions. If the shear force rating is too low, the valve may separate during normal operation or from minor hose pulls. If it is too high, the valve may not activate when needed, resulting in damage to the dispenser or a dangerous fuel spill. Our engineering team works with fuel station operators to select the appropriate breakaway valve configuration for their specific equipment and traffic patterns.

Installation location is another critical consideration. Breakaway valves should be installed at the point where the hose connects to the dispenser, allowing the entire hose assembly to separate cleanly. Some configurations also incorporate a second breakaway point near the nozzle end of the hose. For existing stations, DESEINOR offers retrofit-compatible breakaway valves that integrate with common dispenser models without requiring extensive modification.
